U.S. Army Special Operations History Office

Mission Statement

Preserve the institutional memory and organizational history of ARSOF; inform ARSOF leaders and soldiers, the Army, the DoD, and the nation on ARSOF legacy; and inspire ARSOF soldiers past, present, and future by connecting them with their rich heritage.

History Office Priorities

  1. Execute a historical program in accordance with Commanding General, USASOC priorities and guidance
  2. Perform regulatory functions of a U.S. Army command history office, including production of the annual command history and execution of an oral history program
  3. Preserve the institutional knowledge of the command by collecting and safeguarding ARSOF historical assets
  4. Publish print and web-based historical products conveying ARSOF history and legacy
  5. Provide historical support to commanders and units across the ARSOF enterprise

Current USASOC Historians

COMMAND HISTORIAN

TROY J. SACQUETY, PHD

Troy J. Sacquety earned an MA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a PhD in Military History from Texas A&M University. Prior to joining the USASOC History Office staff in August 2006, he worked several years for the Central Intelligence Agency. His research interests include Army and Office of Strategic Services special operations during World War II, and U.S. Army Civil Affairs.


DEPUTY COMMAND HISTORIAN

JARED M. TRACY, PHD

Jared M. Tracy served six years in the U.S. Army, and became a historian at USASOC in December 2010. He earned an MA in History from Virginia Commonwealth University, an MDiv in Theology from Liberty University, and a PhD in History from Kansas State University. Previously concentrated on PSYOP history, he now researches and writes on a wide range of ARSOF-related topics.


 

CHRISTOPHER E. HOWARD

Christopher E. Howard served four years as a U.S. Army Psychological Operations Specialist before earning an MA in History from Appalachian State University. A Department of the Army Civilian since 2014, he developed PSYOP training programs for USAJFKSWCS prior to joining the USASOC History Office in June 2018. He currently serves as the office lead for the Annual Command History and the USASOC Unit Historical Officer program.

Getting Historical Materials To Us

COORDINATION - Contact the USASOC History Office (arsof_history@socom.mil) for coordination and reception of historical information and assets.

PERSONAL COURIER & POSTAL DELIVERY - The process of transferring physical assets to the History Office will be primarily based on its classification. AR 380-5 is the Department of the Army Information Security Program which provides detailed instructions on the transferring and delivery of classified and unclassified information. DIGITAL FILE DELIVERY - Digital assets stored on physical media, such as an external hard drive or DVD, can be transferred to History Office in same manner as physical materials as described above. If digital assets are located on a computer system, the files can be transferred over to the History Office utilizing DoD Safe Access File Exchange (SAFE) https://safe.apps.mil. This service will allow users to upload unclassified files up to 8GB in size and share them across the globe. Classified files should be quarantined and the History Office Security Manager contacted as soon as possible for assistance in handling the transfer of materials to the History Office.

PICKUP ASSISTANCE - History Office personnel may be able to assist with on-site collection and retrieval of materials. Pickup assistance requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Contact arsof_history@socom.mil for coordination.


FOIA Requests

All USASOC FOIA requests must be submitted through the USASOC Freedom of Information Act Office at USASOC.FOIA@socom.mil.
