Lieutenant Colonel Mayo S. Stuntz

LTC Mayo S. Stuntz

Supply Officer for Alamo Scouts Training Center
(1915-2013)

Bio

Mayo S. Stuntz enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1941 and completed Calvary Officer training at Fort Riley, Kansas, in March 1942. Arriving in Australia in June 1943, Stuntz graduated from the Australian Commando School’s Tactics course and served with the Amphibious Scouts, a joint reconnaissance unit.

Later that year, he was selected by Lieutenant Colonel Frederick W. Bradshaw to be the supply officer for the new Alamo Scouts Training Center (ASTC), located in New Guinea. Despite a lack of formal logistics training, Stuntz overcame formidable obstacles to equip and supply the ASTC and the operational Alamo Scout teams.

Then, he became the U.S. Sixth Army Assistant G-2, directing Philippine guerrilla operations from the Special Intelligence subsection, manned by fellow Alamo Scout officers. After the war, Stuntz transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve and joined the Central Intelligence Agency.

Leveraging his experience, he contributed to the development of Unconventional Warfare doctrine and instructed courses in counterinsurgency and intelligence at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare Center and School, before retiring in 1975.
