The Blue Ranger Lozenge was approved for wear by all Ranger Battalions on 26 July 1943. In practice, it was only worn by the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions stateside and carried with them to the European Theater. These units wore the diamond for the 6 June 1944 invasion of Normandy. However, later in the war, both battalions abandoned the diamond. In its place they wore unofficial scrolls, patterned after that which was originally worn by the 1st Ranger Battalion. It is that pattern insignia that was later adopted by the 75th Infantry Regiment on 26 July 1984. This unit was redesignated as the 75th Ranger Regiment on 14 February 1986.
