Sergeant Thomas J. Field, a native of Lisbon, Maine, died on 3 October 1993 while supporting Operation CONTINUE HOPE in Somalia.

Field enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Tactical Transport Helicopter Repairer in 1987. After completing his Basic Combat Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Virginia, he was awarded the Aircraft Crewman Badge. SGT Field then reported to 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Group.

In August 1993, while serving as MH-60 Black Hawk Crew Chief, SGT Field deployed to Somalia as part of Task Force Ranger. During the Battle of Mogadishu, SGT Field was killed when his helicopter crashed after taking damage from a rocket propelled grenade.
