Staff Sergeant Paul N. Barclay of Bloomfield, Michigan, died on 14 April 1994 while supporting Operation PROVIDE COMFORT in northern Iraq.

Barclay enlisted in the U.S. Army as a 36M, Switching Systems Operator, in 1988. Following Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery in Germany. He successfully assessed for Special Forces training in 1990, ultimately earning the military occupational specialty 18E, Special Forces Communications Sergeant.

SSG Barclay was performing duties as a Communication Sergeant for a UH-60 helicopter when it was accidentally shot down by friendly fire north of Irbil, Iraq. He was assigned to Support Company, 2nd Battalion,10th Special Forces Group at the time of his death.
