A native of Centerville, Ohio, Sergeant First Class Nathan R. Chapman was killed by enemy small arms fire on 4 January 2002 near the town of Khost, Afghanistan.

Chapman enlisted in the Army in 1988 as an Infantryman and volunteered for Airborne and Ranger training before being assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. There, he participated in Operation JUST CAUSE in Panama. In 1991 he deployed with the 47th Infantry Regiment to Saudi Arabia during Operation DESERT STORM.

In December 1991, Chapman graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a Communications Sergeant and served in 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis, Washington, and 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa, Japan.

SFC Chapman was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
