Corporal Matthew A. Commons, of Boulder City, Nevada, was killed by enemy gunfire on 4 March 2002 during Operation ANACONDA at Takur Ghar in Eastern Afghanistan.

Commons enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman on 7 July 2000. Following his initial training, he volunteered for Airborne School and in April 2001 was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, Georgia.

CPL Commons was serving as a grenadier with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
