Staff Sergeant James P. Dorrity, a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, was killed on 22 February 2002 in an MH-47 helicopter crash at sea, near Mindanao, in the Southern Philippines.

Dorrity enlisted in the Army in 1986 as a Medium Helicopter Repairer, and was assigned to 8th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 1999, he completed Green Platoon, and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 2001, SSG Dorrity was assigned to Company E, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Republic of Korea, as a Flight Engineer.

He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES at the time of his death.
