A native of Michigan, Sergeant First Class Mark W. Jackson died on 2 October 2002 as a result of an improvised explosive device in Zamboanga, Philippines.

In 1983, Jackson enlisted in the Army Reserve as a Motor Transport Operator. He went on active duty in 1986 and became a Cannon Crewman assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He attended the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1993 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Jackson joined 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington, in 1999.

SFC Jackson was an Operations Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES at the time of his death.
