Sergeant Philip J. Svitak, of Boulder City, Nevada, was killed by enemy gunfire on 4 March 2002 during Operation ANACONDA at Takur Ghar in Eastern Afghanistan.

Svitak enlisted in the Army in 1989 as a Medium Helicopter Repairer. After initial training, he completed Green Platoon, and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, deploying to Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM. Finishing his enlistment in 1994, he returned to active duty in 1998.

SGT Svitak was serving as an MH-47 Chinook Crew Chief in 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
