A native of Tacoma, Washington, Sergeant Jay A. Blessing was killed in action on 14 November 2003 by an Improvised Explosive Device while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan.

Blessing enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1998 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing the Basic Airborne Course and the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he joined 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. He later graduated from the Army Ranger Course.

SGT Blessing was serving in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
