Born in El Paso, Texas, Master Sergeant George A. Fernandez died of wounds received in action on 2 April 2003 during a combat action in northern Iraq.

Fernandez enlisted in the Army in 1992 as an Infantryman and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, and over the next ten years served in positions ranging from team leader to platoon sergeant. In 2002 he joined the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

MSG Fernandez was serving as a Special Operations Team Member in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM at the time of his death.
