A native of the Woodlands, Texas, Corporal William M. Amundson, Jr. died 18 October 2004 when the Ground Mobility Vehicle in which he was riding rolled over during a ground assault infiltration mission in eastern Afghanistan.

Amundson enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in May 2001. He graduated from One Station Unit Training, the Basic Airborne Course and the Ranger Indoctrination Program at Fort Benning, Georgia.

CPL Amundson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia as a 60 millimeter mortarman in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM when he was killed.
