A native of Lumberton, New Jersey, Sergeant Bryan L. Freeman, Jr. died 8 November 2004 when he came under small arms fire while conducting a vehicle search in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

Freeman entered the Army in 1993 as a Cannon Crewmember at Fort Drum, New York. Leaving the active Army in 1997, he joined the New Jersey Army National Guard.

In 2003, SGT Freeman became a Civil Affairs Sergeant with 404th Civil Affairs Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve. He then transferred to 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion, Warwick, Rhode Island, where he was serving at the time of his death.
