A native of Lake City, South Carolina, Sergeant Major Michael B. Stack was killed in a combat action on 11 April 2004 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.
Stack enlisted in the Army in 1977 as an Infantryman and served in several units, to include the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1988, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In the intervening years he served with the 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, the 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado. He also served as an Instructor at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg.
SGM Stack was assigned as a Company Sergeant Major in 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM at the time of his death.
