A native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Major Paul R. Syverson III was killed on 16 June 2004 during a 107mm rocket attack on Logistical Support Area Anaconda, Balad, Iraq.

Syverson was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer after graduating from the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia in 1993. His first assignment was with 3rd Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Stewart, Georgia. In 1998 he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served as Detachment Commander, battalion staff officer, and commanded the Headquarters Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group.

MAJ Syverson was serving as the 5th Special Forces Group Assistant Operations Officer and was supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM at the time of his death.
