A Florida native, Sergeant Roy A. Wood was killed in a vehicle accident on 9 January 2004 near Kabul, Afghanistan.
Wood was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1979 as a Quartermaster Officer and assigned to the 421st Quartermaster Company in Fort Valley, Georgia. In 1982 he joined 3rd Battalion, 11th Special Forces Group, Fort Meade, Maryland. In 1996, he was assigned to U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. A qualified physician, in 2001 he joined the Florida Army National Guard as the Surgeon for 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Camp Blanding, Florida. He resigned his commission in 2002 but continued serving in 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
SGT Wood was assigned as a Medical Sergeant in 3rd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM at the time of his death.
