A native of Waukegan, Illinois, Sergeant First Class James S. Ochsner died 15 November 2005 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Orgun-e, Afghanistan during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Ochsner enlisted in the Army as an Artilleryman in 1987, and reclassified as an Infantryman in 1990. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2001 and was assigned as a Communications Sergeant to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SFC Ochsner was serving as an Intelligence Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at the time of his death.
