A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Chris J. Scherkenbach died 28 June 2005 when his MH-47 Chinook was downed by a rocket propelled grenade near Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

Scherkenbach enlisted in the Army as a Communications Specialist in April 1987. He graduated from the Warrant Officer Program in 1990 and completed Initial Entry Rotary Wing training in 1991 at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After completing Green Platoon he joined the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

CW4 Scherkenbach was assigned as an MH-47 Chinook Pilot in 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, when he died during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
