A native of London, Kentucky, Sergeant First Class Lance S. Cornett died 3 February 2006, when his unit became involved in a firefight with Iraqi insurgents near Ramadi in Anbar province, Iraq during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

Cornett enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in August 1991 and completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He had multiple Army assignments during his career, to include two tours with the Ranger Training Brigade.

In 2004, SFC Cornett was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command as a Special Operations Team member, where he served until his death.
