A resident of Janesville, Wisconsin, Staff Sergeant Nathan J. Vacho died 5 May 2006, from an improvised explosive device near Al Hillah, Iraq.

Vacho enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in March 1998 as a Military Firefighter assigned to the 336th Engineer Platoon, Duluth, Minnesota. In 2003, he changed career fields after completing the Army Practical Nurse Course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

SSG Vacho was assigned as a Healthcare Specialist to 489th Civil Affairs Battalion, Knoxville, Tennessee, where he served until his death during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
