A native of Lewisville, Texas, Major Matthew W. Worrell died on 14 May 2006 in Yusufiyah, Iraq, when his AH-6 Little Bird was shot down during combat operations.

Worrell was commissioned after graduating from Texas A&M University in 1995, and attended the Aviation Officer Basic Course at Fort Rucker, Alabama. In 1997, he qualified as an OH-58 Kiowa Pilot. After completing Green Platoon, he joined the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in 2003.

MAJ Worrell was serving as a Flight Platoon Leader with 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at the time of his death.
