Raised in California, Major James M. Ahearn died on 5 July 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq, while supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

Ahearn joined the Army in 1989 and graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1994. He had numerous assignments and deployments as an Engineer Officer, including a 2003 deployment to Iraq. He later attended the Civil Affairs Officer Course.

MAJ Ahearn was assigned to 96th Civil Affairs Battalion, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when he was killed by an improvised explosive device that exploded near his vehicle.
