A resident of Yakima, Washington, Major Alan R. Johnson died on 26 January 2007 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, while supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

Johnson enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1980. In 1986, he was commissioned in the North Dakota Army National Guard as a Combat Engineer Officer and assigned to 141st Combat Engineer Battalion, Jamestown, North Dakota. He transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1987 and, in 2005, he was assigned to 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion, based in Tonawanda, New York.

MAJ Johnson was assigned to the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion when he sustained injuries from an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle.
