Chief Warrant Officer 3 Hershel D. McCants, Jr., of Medford, Oregon, died on 18 February 2007 in southeastern Afghanistan.

McCants enlisted in the Army as a Combat Engineer in 1991. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and served as an Engineer Sergeant in the 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington. In 2001 he attended the Warrant Officer Aviation Basic Course at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and in 2005 he completed Green Platoon.

CW3 McCants was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, when his MH-47 Chinook crashed while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
