A resident of Seffner, Florida, Staff Sergeant Michael D. Thomas died on 27 April 2007 in Herat Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Thomas enlisted in the Army as a Military Policeman in 1991. He served in a variety of assignments in the Military Police Corps for thirteen years before volunteering for the Special Forces Qualification Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and graduating in 2006.
SSG Thomas was assigned as a Weapons Sergeant in 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when he was fatally wounded by enemy rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.
