A native of Falls Creek, Pennsylvania, Sergeant First Class Michael J. Tully died on 23 August 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was fatally wounded by an improvised explosive device.

Initially enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, Tully transferred to the Army as an Infantryman in 1997. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before being selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated in 2006.

SFC Tully was assigned as a Medical Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington, when he died during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
