A native of Reinbeck, Iowa, Specialist Travis R. Vaughn died while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 18 February 2007 when his helicopter crashed in southeastern Afghanistan.

Vaughn enlisted in the Army as a Heavy Lift Helicopter Repair Specialist in 2003, and was initially assigned to the 52nd Aviation Regiment, Camp Humphreys, Republic of Korea. He completed Green Platoon in 2005, and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

SPC Vaughn was an MH-47 Crew Chief in 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment at the time of his death.
