A resident of Ovideo, Florida, Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller died from wounds received in combat on 25 January 2008 in Barikowt, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Miller enlisted in the Army as a Special Forces Candidate in 2003. After completing Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2005.

SSG Miller was serving as a Weapons Sergeant in 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. For his valorous actions above and beyond the call of duty he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
