A native of Ashland, Massachusetts, Master Sergeant Shawn E. Simmons died as a result of a non-battle accident on 29 June 2008 in Khosrow-E Sofla, Afghanistan.
Simmons enlisted in the Army in February 1992 as a Power Generation Equipment Repairman and was assigned to the 307th Forward Maintenance Company, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1999 and was assigned as an Engineer Sergeant in 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He became an instructor at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School in 2005.
MSG Simmons was serving as a Team Sergeant in 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at the time of his death. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
