A native of Jonesboro, Georgia, Master Sergeant Mitchell W. Young died on 13 July 2008 in eastern Helmand Province, Afghanistan, from an improvised explosive device.

Young enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in January 1991 and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, Fort Ord, California. He later served in 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Germany. He graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1999 and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 2004, he was assigned to the United States Army Tactical Review Board, Fort Bragg, NC.

MSG Young joined 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2007 and was serving as a Team Sergeant when he was killed. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
