A native of Julian, California, Captain Ronald G. Luce, Jr. was killed on 2 August 2009 in Qole Gerdsar, Afghanistan, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

In 2002, Luce was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the Army National Guard through the ROTC Program at the Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania. In May 2008, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as a liaison officer.

CPT Luce was assigned as a Detachment Commander in Company C, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Camp McCain, Mississippi. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM when he was killed.
