A longtime resident of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, Staff Sergeant Marc J. Small died on 12 February 2009 from wounds suffered by rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire at Faramuz, Afghanistan.

Small enlisted in the Army as a Special Forces Candidate in December 2004 and attended Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SSG Small was serving as a Medical Sergeant assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group when he was killed. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
