A long-time resident of Bridgeport, West Virginia, Sergeant First Class Duane A. Thornsbury was killed on 12 September 2009 in Baghdad, Iraq, in a vehicle accident while supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.

Thornsbury enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in April 1996 as a Supply Specialist. He came on active duty in September 2002. In 2006, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SFC Thornsbury was serving as a Weapons Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado, when he was killed. He was on his third deployment to Iraq.
