A native of Hermann, Missouri, Sergeant First Class William B. Woods, Jr. died on 16 August 2009 of wounds received from small arms fire on 14 August 2009 while conducting a mounted patrol in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

Woods enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1996 as an Infantryman. He later enlisted in the Maryland Army National Guard, graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2003, and was assigned to the 20th Special Forces Group, Birmingham, Alabama.

SFC Woods was serving as a Medical Sergeant with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, Glen Arm, Maryland, when he was killed. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
