A longtime resident of Centerville, Washington, Master Sergeant Mark W. Coleman was killed on 2 May 2010 in Khakrez, Afghanistan, by an improvised explosive device. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Coleman enlisted in the Army in October 1988 as a Fire Support Specialist. He served in Field Artillery assignments in Weisbaden, Germany; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Camp Casey, Republic of Korea; and Fort Lewis, Washington. In 2001, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned as a Weapons Sergeant to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Fort Lewis, Washington. He supported Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-PHILIPPINES, and deployed twice to Afghanistan with the Australian Special Air Service Regiment. In 2008, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group.

MSG Coleman was serving as a Team Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group when he was killed.
