A native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Corporal Michael D. Jankiewicz died on 9 April 2010 in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, when the CV-22 Osprey aircraft he was aboard crashed during a combat operation.

Jankiewicz enlisted in the Army in July 2006 and attended One Station Unit Training, and the Basic Airborne Course, at Fort Benning, Georgia. After graduating from the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning Georgia, where he served as a grenadier and machine gunner.

CPL Jankiewicz was serving as a machine gun team leader with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment when he was killed while supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
