A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Sergeant Jonathan K. Peney died on 1 June 2010 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, from enemy fire while trying to provide aid to a wounded comrade.
Peney enlisted in the Army as a Combat Medic in November 2005. After graduating from the Ranger Indoctrination Program at Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Special Operations Combat Medic Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.
SGT Peney was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment when he was killed. He was supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
