A resident of Hooker, Oklahoma, Captain David J. Thompson died on 29 January 2010 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, when he was shot by an Afghan interpreter during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Thompson enlisted in the Army in 1989 as a Radio Operator and served in the Regimental Signal Detachment and Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia. He was commissioned in the Chemical Corps in 2002 and served in several units. In 2008 he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

CPT Thompson was a Detachment Commander in 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group when he was killed. This was his third deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
