A native of Dana Point, California, Sergeant Tyler N. Holtz died 24 September 2011, when he was struck by small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Holtz enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in October 2007. He served for four years with 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

SGT Holtz graduated from the Ranger Indoctrination Program in July 2008 and was assigned as a rifleman and team leader in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served until his death.
