A native of Sacramento, California, Captain Joseph W. Schultz died on 29 May 2011 of wounds sustained from the detonation of an improvised explosive device while conducting a combat patrol in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
A 1997 graduate of the University of Oregon,Schultz accepted a commission in the Army as a Military Intelligence Officer in 2003. He served in 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2010.
CPT Schultz was serving as a Detachment Commander in 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, at the time of his death.
