A native of Long Beach, California, Sergeant Thomas R. MacPherson died 12 October 2012, when he was struck by enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

MacPherson enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in May 2007. He served for five years with 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

SGT MacPherson graduated from the Ranger Indoctrination Program in December 2007 and was assigned as a mortarman and team leader in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served until his death.
