A native of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Sergeant First Class Ryan J. Savard died 12 October 2012, of wounds sustained while his unit was conducting combat operations in the Khan Abad District, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Savard enlisted in the Army as a Helicopter Repairer in August 2001. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he was assigned to the 7th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment in Giebelstadt, Germany.

SFC Savard graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2008 and was assigned as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant to Group Support Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In May 2010, he was selected as a Special Operations Team member and assigned to United States Army Special Operations Command where he served until his death.
