A native of Denver, Colorado, Sergeant First Class Liam J. Nevins died 21 September 2013, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Paktia Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Nevins enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 504th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

SFC Nevins graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in August 2011 and was assigned as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant to 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado, where he served until his death.
