A native of San Antonio, Texas, Staff Sergeant Michael H. Simpson died 1 May 2013, of wounds sustained from the detonation of an improvised explosive device while his unit was conducting combat operations in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Simpson enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in April 2003. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment, Fort Myer, Washington DC.

SSG Simpson graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in July 2011 and was assigned as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant to 4th Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he served until his death.
