A native of Woodstock, Georgia, Sergeant Joshua J. Strickland died 21 September 2013, from small arms fire while his unit was operating in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Strickland enlisted in the Army as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in June 2008. After completing Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he reported to the 1st Special Forces Group at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

SGT Strickland was assigned to Group Support Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, at the time of his death.
