A native of Woodstock, Georgia, Sergeant Joshua J. Strickland died 21 September 2013, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

SGT Strickland enlisted in the Army as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in June 2008. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he was assigned to Group Support Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he served until his death.
