A native of Noblesville, Indiana, Staff Sergeant Matthew R. Ammerman died 3 December 2014, of wounds sustained from small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Ammerman enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 2003. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

SSG Ammerman graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2013 and was assigned as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant to 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, where he was serving at the time of his death.
