A native of Bay City, Michigan, Sergeant First Class Michael A. Cathcart died 14 November 2014, of wounds sustained from small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Cathcart enlisted in the Army as a Fire Support Specialist in 2001. After completing his Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

SFC Cathcart graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2009 and was assigned as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served until the time of his death.
