A native of Portland, Oregon, Specialist John A. Pelham died 12 February 2014, of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting combat operations in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Pelham enlisted in the Army as a Signal Intelligence Analyst in July 2011. He completed initial entry training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Individual Training at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas.

SPC Pelham was assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in February 2013, where he was serving at the time of his death.
