Born in Houston, Texas, Staff Sergeant James F. Moriarty was killed in Jordan on 4 November 2016 by small arms fire while supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.
Moriarty enlisted in the Army in September 2011 as a Special Forces Candidate. After completing Infantry One Station Unit Training and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant in December 2013. He was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He deployed multiple times to the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility.
SSG Moriarty was conducting a Special Forces training mission in Jordan at the time of his death.
